The bunk beds were among the first areas we framed out during our skoolie conversion. We prioritized this because it was crucial in the layout finalizing process. Compromises could be made with the kitchen, storage, or bathroom, but not with the kids' dedicated space.

We constructed the bed frames using 2x4s and secured them with construction screws, opting for plywood as the bed surface to support the mattresses.

Recommendations for Materials:

  • Lumber : Choose high-quality, straight 2x4s for sturdy framing.

  • Plywood: Opt for at least ¾ inch thickness for a solid bed surface.

  • Screws: Use heavy-duty construction screws for reliable assembly.

After framing, we needed additional carpentry work for the bunk bed's facade and ladder. During our time in Maryland, we sought skilled carpenters for these tasks.

Despite initial delays due to COVID-19, the carpentry team eventually arrived, ready to work on our pantry, closet shelves and doors, barn door, and under-bunk drawers, including the bunk bed facade.

The bunk bed was completed on the first day, but we noticed a flaw with the ladder that needed fixing. When addressed, the repair process caused more damage to the facade, leading to a less-than-ideal solution.

The drawers under the bunk beds and the closet shelves were finished on the second day. However, upon closer inspection, we found that recycled materials were used for some parts, and the drawer designs were decided without our input.

Recommendations for Finishing Touches:

We didn’t want to skimp when it came to personalizing the kids space so here are just some of our suggestions:

  • Drawer Pulls: Consider adding stylish hardware for a polished look… and to keep the little finger prints off the surfaces

  • Paint/Stain: Use high-quality paint or stain to finish the wood, enhancing durability and aesthetics.

  • Bedding: We splurged here on bedding for the kids beds. We actually really like the Beddy’s bedding— it’s really easy to quickly make the beds on travel days and it leaves the kids beds looking great all the time

  • Shelves: We put up little shelves in all the kids beds so they’d have the ability to keep their favorite books and toys near.

  • Cute Kid Lights: You can’t have a cozy kid corner without little lights!

Despite these issues, we were generally pleased with the outcome of the carpentry work. It was evident that the same level of care and attention to detail seen in other projects was somewhat lacking in ours.

In summary, while the craftsmanship was satisfactory for built-in structures like closets or shelves, we hoped for more engagement and better decision-making from our hired help.
