After a six hour drive through the night we pulled into our reserved space in the Upper Pines campsite within Yosemite. Having never been there before, we had no idea as to the magnitude of the shear size of the valley we had entered. We quickly set up our rooftop tent and fell asleep wondering what the daylight would bring. Sometime around 3:00 am, Chelsea and I were awoken to the sensation of wet feet. As we opened our tent and pierced the night with flashlights we discovered it was snowing and had been some time, apparent by the inch or so on the ground. And of course we had forgot to bring our rain fly for the trip! We soggily abandoned our tent and climbed into the cab of the truck to wait it out until daybreak. This trip will forever hold a special place in my memory for a few reasons. First, it was just Chelsea and I, no kids.. Which meant plenty of that hidden gem parents constantly seek… Silence. Nothing puts your existence into perspective like standing at the foot of a 3,000 ft granite beast known globally as El Capitan or “The Chief”.
