As we entered the park it became crystal clear that we were merely visitors. These trees, these towering yet silent creatures, had grown roots long before us and it was apparent that they would remain long after we would depart. Out of all of the national parks I’ve been to the redwoods are near the top of the list. Walking the pups through the cool forest air gawking at the size of the trees is forever etched into my mind. These massive trees have been known to grow up to 2,000 years old but typically have lifespans closer to 500 years. One of the reasons they have the ability to live so long is the manner in which their roots grow. Because they are so close together, they interweave their root systems increasing the overall strength of each tree as well as the collective area of trees. If we could take away one thing from this park it would be this; If we stand together we are a much more formidable force.
